Soothing Throat Syrup

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup licorice root (or powder)
  • 1/2 cup marshmallow root (or powder) – can substitute for marshmallow leak, plantain leaf, or an extra dose of licorice
  • 4 cups purified, filtered or distilled water
  • cooking stovetop pot
  • cheese cloth or French press
  • glass jar (Mason)
  • 1 cup honey (raw and local is best!)
    • can also use organic cane sugar, or coconut sugar, or any other of your choice – will need about 170 grams (6 oz)
  • optional: 1 tsp each of cinnamon root, ginger root, or eucalyptus leaf (or powders)

Directions:

  1. Combine all herbs and place in the cooking pot on the stovetop.
  2. Pour over with water, and bring to a boil.
  3. Reduce heat and continue to simmer until the water reduces the volume to about half.
  4. Let cool, then strain using cheesecloth or French press.
  5. Transfer to a glass jar, and stir in the honey or sugar.
  6. Store in a cool, dark place or in the fridge for up to 6 weeks.
  7. Shake or stir well and take 1 tsp of the syrup as needed to soothe raw, irritated throat or vocal cords.
