Browsing around the mini-library my boss Chris, owner of Radicle Herb Shop, keeps at the shop, my eye landed on the elaborate hardcover beautiful dark blue text titled “The Practicing Herbalist.” I started flipping through it looking for interesting content, as I often do, but I couldn’t help but turn back and start from the beginning. I was immediately engrossed in the familiar and friendly tone of the author, who from the first pages welcomed the reader entirely into her life as an herbalist and a person. I could tell right away that I can learn a lot from this book. Not only did it contain a wealth of diagnostic and herbal information, but the presentation of it was easy to read and comprehend, and there were hand-drawn illustrations of all the concepts discussed.
Literally the week after I started reading this book at work little by little, I got the opportunity to meet the author and herbalist Margi Flint and see her in action! She was teaching a full-day workshop at my herbal school Arbor Vitae in the West Village in NYC. I was thrilled to be able to attend the class and spend time in the presence of the student of William LeSassier, Karyn Sanders, David Winston and many other great herbalists. We spent the day learning diagnostic tools for reading facial lines, ears, tongues, nail appearance, and intrinsic factor deficiencies. Then we got to really delve in and practice the art of these readings on everyone in the class. It was an amazing opportunity to witness Margi at work and get to learn hands-on from her in this practicum. You can find her book on her website.
