Day 167/365 – On Catnip

6/16/17

Today I’m talking about the herb that goes hand-in-hand with chamomile’s uses, but with some contrasting qualities. You may all know catnip (Nepeta cataria) as the herb that drives cats wild. It’s acts as a euphoric or aphrodisiac for acts, while it calms us humans down. Catnip is also nutritionally dense – rich in inositol, phosphorus, sodium, sulfur, folic acid, pantothenic acid and other B-vitamins. It’s an aromatic herb in the mind family, and like chamomile it acts on the gut-mind. It’s useful in dyspepsia, flatulence, ulcers, IBS, and in cases of H. pylori (bacteria that may play a role in ulcers) overgrowth. It’s indicated in particular when tension is held in stomach, or there is any pent up tension. It is also used in panic attacks, ADHD, nervous headaches and nightmares. In children, it can be used to treat fever, colic, hiccups, and insomnia. Unlike chamomile, catnip is “for people who hold their complaints in” – cry on inside. It works well in teas, tinctures or ground up and used in smoke blends. The essential oil also works wonders as a natural insect repellent, including ticks!
