The next herb in the ‘stress-busters’ series is Milky oat tops (Avena sativa). They are called ‘milky’ due to the milky-white liquid comes out of seeds at the time of harvest. The tops and the lower parts, called oatstraw, are used for their supremely nutritive and replenishing qualities. They nourish the nervous system and are known as ‘trophorestorative’ – returning function to exhausted, depleted, overstressed nerves. Milky oats are also indicated for occipital pain towards spine, and can be useful in headaches or migraines, or in cases of withdrawal from nicotine or caffeine or other drug abuse. It’s a gentle, long term tonic – for people that are “burning candle at both ends.” It’s best taken as a strong infusion – left overnight in boiling water, and strained in the morning. That way the most vitamins are extracted, but tinctures and capsules can be helpful as well.
