Today I’m highlighting the herb known as Holy basil or tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum). Like ashwagandha, it’s a supreme herb part of the ayurvedic compendium, and it’s used as a long-term adaptogen. It’s known as a tonic with an affinity for the brain and nervous system. It increases oxygen intake, which positively influences mental function and promotes energy endurance. It increases physical stamina by helping build muscle while burning fat, and it also boosts libido. It’s been used to treat mental fog and poor memory due to ADHD, depression, menopause, drug use, or chronic stress – which can all manifest as adrenal fatigue. In addition, it is considered to be antiviral/antibacterial/inflammatory, hepatoprotective, immune balancing, BG (blood glucose) regulating, carminative (helps expel excess gas and bloating in digestive tract) and gut healing (for example in gastritis/ulcers). It’s in the mint family and has a very pleasant aroma in teas, and can also add a nice flavor to tinctures.
